FRIDAY NIGHT:
We had Women's Bible Study @ 5pm and afterwards I had planned to go visit Karina's school's Halloween party. I didn't get a chance to do that, but I did get to check out a Sally's-like store with Sarai. Now, most of you may think that I'm not the type for make-up, eyelash extensions, and the like, but I am still a girl, and I do like playing with that stuff. (I'm just not a fan of buying it and actually wearing them.) Back to the weekend - after my dress-up moment with Sarai, I headed over to Hector's house for a youth hang out for one of the other churches here in Piedras: KM 10. We had lots of fun hanging out. We had some Bible trivia (which I'm very rusty on. Bible Bowl, where are you?!), played some group games outdoors (that may or may not have involved a defibrillator type machine), and had the every so delicious tamales. It was a really fun night to hang out with the youth. I am starting to enjoy getting to know different kids from different churches.
SATURDAY:
Saturday we had an Area Wide Youth Conference at a church here in Piedras: Ejido. We probably had about 100-140 kids out there. It was from 9am till 5pm. The theme was about staying strong in the Lord. We heard lessons over David and Goliath, King Josiah, and what the NT says about staying strong in the Lord. In between each speaker we had some fun group games - like a peg board or who can find the verse the fastest. About 3pm we "concluded" the worship part of the conference and had activities outside. These were pretty fun activities and props to those who had the ideas to do them. The church in Ejido had made a life-size Goliath and one activity was to take a slingshot and aim for Goliath's head. It was harder than it looked! Another activity (so I hear) had you put your hand in horse manure while your teammates answered some questions. (Cultural Difference #???)
After the youth conference, we headed over to Josue's parents house because we were celebrating Josue's mom's birthday. (No Halloween for us) I think all of the family was there at the party -- which is a lot of people because she has 13 kids! We ate the ever so delicious Carne Asada, baked potatoes, corn, beans, salsa, chips -- you name it, we had it! (and I'd also like to add that I now enjoy salsa on almost everything I eat - and what we had that night was amazing!)
SUNDAY:
Sunday I had to teach the toddler class during the sermon. Sarai and I co-teach actually, and it's nothing more than a snack and coloring page. The kids are starting to get to know me better, which I am excited about. It was after teaching this class that I had realized what I'd like to "put my name on" for while I am here. For the past two weeks or so I have been praying about what and where God could use me while I am here in Piedras. Yes, God has placed in my lap some amazing opportunities that I am taking advantage of right now, but I was praying about ways to "ignite" some of the goals I had before I came. I came to the conclusion that I would like to establish a children's ministry in our church. After talking with Josue, we decided that it would be beneficial to start writing out the proposal and curriculum now, so that we can prepare it for CAIMAS - the building project. Anyways, I know this isn't about my activities this weekend, but I did want to share with you a little bit of what I am starting to work on for the future. I don't have much background in children's ministry, and so I am starting to research a lot about how to start something like this - it also makes it harder since I am searching for Iglesia de Cristo ideas. So, if you could add that to your prayer list I would really appreciate it.
Miss all of you so very much.
Be Strong in the Lord,
Rachel
